Every now and then you see birds and their sound fills up the air. Ever wondered which group they belong to? Birds, they exist in a huge variety. Some red, some green and other multicolored. There are many different kinds of birds around us. Here, we discuss their types.
Types of Birds:
1. Pet BirdsThese birds have their own characteristics, traits and personalities. Pet Birds have been domesticated since ages. This type is again segregated into sub-types based of their sizes. Some of the Birds falling into this group are:i) Extra small Pet Birds:Canaries: Small songbird, Origin: Marcaronesian Islands. Family: Finch.Finches: Passerine Birds, seed eating songbirds. Family: Fringillidae.ii) Small Pet Birds:Cockatiels: Crested parrot or small cockatoo. Family: Cockatoo.Lovebirds: Affectionate and social small parrot. Family: Psittaculidae.Small Parakeets: Species of parrot, have long tail feathers.Parrotlets: Short tails and stocky build. Family: Psittacidae.iii) Medium Pet Birds:Caiques: Stocky and small, with a short and square tail, pure and bright colors- considered as the most beautiful parrot species (in aviculture business). Family: Psittacidae.Small Conures: Long tailed, Lories & Lorikeets: Brush-tipped tongue, for feeding on numerous soft fruits and blossoms's nectar (preferably berries). Family: Psittacidae.Pionus Parrots: Bare eye ring (vary in color), chunky body and short square tail. Family: Psittacidae.Poicephalus: Stocky birds, short broad tails, relatively large beaks and head for their size. Family: Psittacidae.iv) Large Pet Birds:African Greys: Predominately grey, black-billed parrot. Family: Psittacidae.Amazons: Predominantly green, remarkable ability to mimic other sounds ( also human speech). Family: Psittacidae.Eclectus: Male- mostly bright emerald green plumage, Female- mostly bright red and blue/purple plumage. Family: Psittaculidae.Hawk headed Parrots: Elongated neck feathers. Family: Psittacidae.v) Extra large Pet birds:Macaws: Long tails, proportionately larger beaks, light colored (multi), medial (facial patch) areas. Family: Psittacidae.Large Cockatoos: Also umbrella cockatoo, when surprised- extends a large & striking head crest. Family: Cacatuidae.
2. Game Birds:These birds are legally hunted for either food or sport. They are often large species, plum as would be suitable for meat. Some of them are:Quail: Old World quail- Phasianidae Family & New World Quail- Odontophoridae Family.Chukar Partridge: Well marked black and white bars on the flanks, a black band runs across the eyes from the forehead and runs down the head forming a necklace enclosing a white throat. Family: Phasianidae.
3. Flightless Birds:These birds can't fly, quite large (mostly) & some of them are raised for food-items. Some of them are:Ostrich: Long neck and legs. Family: Struthionidae.
Penguins: Highly adapted for life in the water, countershaded dark and white plumage and wings evolved into flippers. Family: Spheniscidae.Kiwi: Smallest living ratites and lay the largest egg in relation to their body size of any species of bird in the world. Belongs to Apterygidae Family.Rhea: American Rhea and Darwin's Rhea are the two extant species, both currently rated as near-threatened (native ranges). Family: Rheidae.Emu: Soft-feathered, brown, long and thin legs & necks. Family: Dromaiidae.
4. Wild Birds:These birds have not been domesticated. They don't simply do well in being caged or in a family home. The list of such birds is too long.
5. Farm Poultry:These birds are raised for a specific purpose, mainly for food and eggs.Chickens: Domesticated fowl, Family: Phasianidae.Ducks: Mostly aquatic, found in both fresh water and sea water. Family: Anatidae.Geese: Comprises the genera: Anser (the grey geese), Chen( the white geese) and Branta( the black geese). Family: Anatidae.Turkeys: Males have a distinctive fleshly wattle that hangs from top of the beak. Family: Phasianidae.
6. Birds of Prey:These birds are predator type. You need have the proper training and need to be licensed to keep them. Moreover, you need the right equipment to handle them.Hawks: Mainly woodland birds with high visual acuity (hunting by sudden dashes from a concealed perch) and long tails.Eagles: Heavy head and beak. Family: Accipitridae.Falcons: Thin tapered wings that enables them to fly at high speed & to change direction very rapidly.Osprey: Brown- Upperpart and predominantly greyish- on the head & underparts. Family: Pandionidae.
7. Waterfowl:These birds are too big for the average home. They are beautiful and have a very specialized housing needs. Family: Accipitridae.Pelicans: Long beak and a large throat pouch. Family: Pelecanidae.Swans: Long necks and are among the largest flying birds. Family: Anatidae.Flamingos: Young flamingos hatch with greyish reddish plumage. but adults range from light pink to bright red. Family: Phoenicopteridae.
